PRGARIJA

The story dates back to Austria-Hungary, when Emperor Maria Theresa required her subjects, in particular farmers, to plant pear trees to help relieve famine in the country. These pear trees were named tepka ('tepsti' is a Slovene verb that means 'beat') because anyone who refused to plant pear trees received a beating. Dried tepka pears are called prga, and although they hardly qualify for a fruit table, they are very sweet. Prga were common ingredients in the local cuisine. The nearby village Zasip, or Prgarija (‘the land of prga’) has made it its mission to ensure that these traditions and customs are kept alive and that knowledge about tepka pears is passed on from generation to generation.
